On Saturday morning November 19, 2011 the St. Johns Nappanee Bell was placed in its new home at Lutherwald.

The Hanes Lodge Basement has undergone a complete make over in recent weeks. New paint and lighting has allowed us to reclaim over 1200 square feet of program space. Before the summer of 2012 this space will be equipped with recreation and play equipment and will serve as a camp gathering spot.

The Nappanee Big Bell

As many of you know, St John's Lutheran in Nappanee closed their church in July after over 100 years in operation. The congregation voted to give their church building and parsonage to LOMIK. Both of those buildings are now for sale and part of the proceeds will be used to establish a lasting legacy to the ministry of St. John's at Camp Lutherwald.

On September 12, 2011 the bell was removed from the church in Nappanee and will be given a permanent home at Lutherwald.

Bob Bosserman led the assembled group in prayer before the bell was removed.

Yes, that's Lutherwald's own Don Bernard entering the belfry to assist with the removal.

Larry Garber, the master planner of this project, guides the bell through the access hole in the tower.

The wheel and frame had to be removed in the belfry to allow the bell to be lowered through the opening.

Don operated the chain driven hoist device from the top that lowered the 36", 1000 lb. bell to the ground.

A pontoon trailer was backed into the church entry in order to remove the bell from the church.

Once the bell was outside the church, it was lifted off the trailer by using a large tree branch to anchor the lifting device.

Church ladies then assisted in lowering the bell onto Larry's truck for transport to Lutherwald after a good sandblasting!

In the 1980's and early 90's all youth camps at Lutherwald were closed with the staff singing a special song to the campers at the their time of departure. Somehow over the years that tradition was abandoned and words to the song were lost and forgotten. Thanks to Chris Miller (past counselor from Lagrange, IN) the words were found and are printed below.

Lutherwald Wedding Reception Pictures

On Saturday, August 6, 2011, former LOMIK staff members Dom Guido & Jessica Turner were joined in marriage at Faith Lutheran church in Fort Wayne. After the ceremony the wedding party, friends, and family headed to Camp Lutherwld for the reception.

Camp Lutherwald provided a unique and meaningful setting for this "camp couple" to kick off their marriage celebration. A large tent, dance floor, and catered dinner all added to this special evening's ambiance. The families and out of town guests spent the weekend in the lake-front Kempski Retreat Center.

South Twin Lake provided a wonderful background for the evening's celebration!

On Saturday July 23, 2011 an exciting new event took place at Lake Luther. Kids Against Hunger, Thrivent, The Dekko Foundation, Project Help, and over 250 volunteers teamed with the staffs from Lake Luther, Lutherwald, & Luther Road to pack 61,138 meals for the hungry.

After training the volunteers worked in teams of twelve to measure, weigh, and seal this highly nutritious mixture. The Kids against Hunger meals have been formulated by food scientists to provide a rich source of easily digestible protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins. The food also accommodates a wide variety of ethnic and religious differences in tastes and practices.

At any one time there were 11 teams of twelve working throughout the Hagen Center.

Kids Against Hunger's meals offer all nine of the essential amino acids required for complete nutrition. That cannot be said for many hunger relief foods consisting only of rice or bans alone.

All volunteers were furnished with T-shirts, hair covering, and gloves.

The beauty of this formulation is its simplicity. It is made from four dry ingredients that are easy to package, keep for long periods and require only boiling water to prepare.

Every worker had their own area of responsibility.

The volunteers came from the community, local churches, youth groups, Thrivent, Project Help, and the Lake Luther Campground.

After the product was heat sealed it was placed in boxes for distribution to the local food banks.

Seven pallets of dry goods (rice, vegetables, protein mix) arrived at camp the day before the packing took place.

Kids of all ages helped in the packing process. After each shift the volunteers were treated to a BBQ dinner prepared in the Lake Luther kitchen.

Lake Luther Fest 2011

I seem to have lost several of my pictures from this year's Lake Luther Fest, but as usual a great time was had by all who attended. This year's festival featured:

On Saturday afternoon 14 teams took part in what has become the annual Corn Hole Tournament.

Lutherroad Day Camps - Week of July 11

This week, Luther Road Day Camps are taking place at Trinity Lutheran Church in Valparaiso, Holy Trinity in South Bend, and Hope Lutheran in Columbia City. During the morning sessions the Luther Road staffs present "Panda Mania", this year's chosen Bible School curriculum. After lunch the day campers participate in a variety of camp games, special events, songs, and play.

At Valpo, campers start their day with songs and skits in the sanctuary. Trinity has over 50 day campers and 50 additional preschoolers involved in this weeks events. The volunteers from trinity are in the tie dye shirts.

Besides their song and study time, campers participate in a variety of fun outdoor games.

Today's gospel lesson came from Matthew Chapter 13, it was the Parable of the Sower. During the reading and the sermon that followed I couldn't help but think about how much this parable applied to what we try to do at our camps.

Each of our three locations have a rich history of faithful servants who took a great risk in providing a special place where the seeds of God's word could be sown. Their risk, through the work of the Holy Spirit, has produced great fruit. Many pastors and church workers have felt God's call at our sites and countless youth have been shepherded on their personal faith walk by our summer staffs. Families have been strengthened and enriched by their time together at our camps away from the hustle of their daily lives. Churches and church bodies have used our facilities to plan and refine their ministry and mission. Civic groups and social ministry organizations have planned their outreach activities at our camps. The list could just go on and on...

Those of us who support this ministry with our time, talents, gifts and service have much to be thankful for. God has provided fertile ground and the proper nutrients for the seeds that are sown at Lake Luther, Lutherwald, & Lutheran Hills. Please continue to support this ministry with your prayers and your gifts.

2011 LOMIK Camps are underway!

We are now into week three of our 2011 summer season and exciting new programs and equipment are present at all three sites. At Lutherwald eight new kayaks and the Aquaglide Water Trampoline are proving to be big hits with the campers and staff. Lake Luther has a new 22' Watermat (an easy mount soft raft) and eight new kayaks as well. The new Welcome Center, which features a new canteen, craft area, and summer office is being used at Lutheran Hills and the Wiffle Ball stadium is near completion. We need the rain to stop to finish construction!

While all of the physical changes at our sites are important and build excitement among our campers and staff the most important thing that happens at LOMIK camps is the faith nurturing and development that takes place each week. This summer our Bible study theme is "Jesus Chooses You" Our campers take part in daily lessons, chapels, campfires, songs, games and crafts that reinforce the daily topics such as being CALLED, PROTECTED, SPOKEN TO, by Jesus.

Please remember to keep our ministry in your prayers. Pray for the safety of our campers and staff, and pray that hearts and minds will be open to receiving the "Good News" that is shared each day at camp.

Hi, my name is Amy. I'm from Bryan, Ohio, and I'm a junior at Bowling Green State University majoring in math education. I went to Lutherwald for a couple of summers for catechism camp. Memories that stick with me include canoeing, mud hiking, polar bear swimming, and campfire songs and skits. I'm very excited to share in these experiences and many new ones while delving into God's Word and growing together.

Currently I am finishing up my third year at Northern Kentucky University. 2011 is my third year working with LOM-IK, specially Luther Road. Hi! My name is Madison Teskey, and I am currently a freshman at Butler University. I am majoring in Sociology, Religion, and Gender Studies. I went to Lutheran Hills for about 8 years, and when push came to shove, I decided that I loved camp too much to let my journey end there! Last summer, I worked in the kitchen at Lake Luther, and I am now thrilled to be a counselor at Lutherwald!

Hey! My name is Katie Jo Hunt and I am finishing up my Freshman year at Wittenberg University where I'm majoring in Economics and International Studies with a minor in Russian Language. At Wittenberg I am involved in Habitat for Humanity, the outdoors club and Kappa Delta sorority. I love arts and crafts and being outside! As a camper I alternated between Lutheran Hills and Lake Luther. Last summer I worked in the kitchen with the fabulous Molly Gramza! I'm so excited to work as a counselor this summer!!

Hi my name is Joshua Beaudoin. I'm going to be a third-year counselor at LOMIK as of this summer. This summer is my first summer at Lutherwald, but I am certainly looking forward to it. I'll be a junior at Capital University this fall and I'm studying creative and professional writing. I'm excited about serving the Lord at camp this summer.

Hi, my name's Kathy Roberts. I'm from Wapakoneta, Ohio and this fall I will be attending Cedarville University. Some things I enjoy are music, acting, being outdoors, and baking. I feel like I've grown up at the LOMIK camps, and am absolutely ecstatic about giving the campers the same great experiences I've had. I'll be on the kitchen support staff at Lutherwald this summer helping to make some delicious meals.

Hey! My names is Melissa Johnson and I am finishing up my freshman year at Indiana University. I am planning on studying nursing with a minor in public health. I'm involved in CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ) and am obsessed with all things horses and horseback riding, and hopefully will compete on the equestrian team next year. I love camp and went to Lutherwald for about 7 years through middle school and high school. I love food, being outside, watching movies, making friendship bracelets, and talking to pretty much anyone.

Hi Everyone! My name is Josh and I am INSANELY excited to be a counselor at Lutherwald this summer. I attended Lutheran hills for a couple of years and i am thankful the opportunity to pass on the great experience that I had there. I just finished my sophomore year at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN as a theatre major with a management studies concentration. Hi! My name is Mary Griebel. I’ll be a junior at IPFW in the Fall. I’m 21 and I love photography and art. I’m majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Needs.I have 3 brothers and I adore my family. I love swimming and I was in colorguard all four years of highschool(2 years of which I was captain.) I like twizzlers and dr. pepper. I also love doing skits.My pastor convinced my parents into letting me go to church camp as a 2nd grader with the confirmation class. I was definitely the youngest there, but I loved it! I’ve gone three other years since, camp has always been near my heart. I’m excited to be a part of it this year!

Hello everyone, I am Emily Montgomery and I'll be a junior at Alma College in fall of 2011, majoring in psychology and with a minor in religious studies. This summer will be my third summer on staff at Lake Luther, and my second year counseling. Prior to being on staff I had spent 6 years being a camper at Lutherwald and loved every second of it! The staff and counselors I grew to know over those years made me love camp so much I never wanted to leave, and inspired me to be on staff so I could inspire campers' faith the way they did mine. Camp holds a very near and dear place in my heart because my first summer at Lutherwald as a camper is when I began my relationship with God for the first time. I cannot express how much camp has continued to develop my faith and teach me so many lessons every summer. One of my favorite lessons is that the detachment from cell phones and facebook all week is such a blessing! It is so enjoyable to spend all that time with people that I have made life long friends with as a camper that I am still close with today; as well as friendships with staff members that I am sure will last for years.

Hello! My name is Sam Herrin and I am from Franklin, Indiana. This summer I will serve as the Kitchen Supervisor at Lake Luther. This is my 6th summer on staff, and I have worked at Lake Luther, Lutherwald, and Lutheran Hills in the past as a kitchen supervisor, kitchen staff member, and program director. I was also a camper at Lutheran Hills for 12 years - so I have had a long history with LOM-IK. I love that I get to work for the organization that shaped my faith and life so much. I am a 2009 graduate of The Chef's Academy with a degree in Baking and Pastry arts and I'm excited to get back into the kitchen at camp this summer! I am also excited to get married at the end of the summer to my wonderful fiance Adam at Lutherwald!! Interesting side note: I did the math and figured out that our first-year counselors (just finishing their freshman year of college) were in the 7th grade when I started working on staff. Ah!

Hi! My name is Megan Radloff and I attend Valparaiso University, entering my junior year in the fall. I'm majoring in nursing and am a cheerleader at Valpo. I worked in the LL kitchen in '08 and '09. I guess you could say camp is my "home", literally :) My favorite camp activities (if I had to pick one) are campfire, capture the flag, and crazy dinner. Hey my name's Elena. You may not know me because after a slight and minor accident last summer I missed the opportunity to participate in the extreme washing of countless dishes in the marvelous kitchen at Lutheran Hills. Now, I'll be returning to log time as a counselor taking time off from Purdue University here in Indiana where I will be a sophomore in the fall. As a forestry major I'd like to work for the National Parks or the DNR when I get big and otherwise grow-up. I have been coming to Lutheran Hills for as long as I can remember, participated in Servant Camp, and have made it to Lake Luther over the years once too. As a kid, Lutheran Hills, with the people and Christian atmosphere it provides, was always the highlight of my summer and I am excited to pass that joy on to the campers of summer 2011.

I'm Erin Baker and this will be my third year on staff and second year as a counselor at LH. I will be a senior this coming year at Ball State University, studying English Education and Spanish. I'm involved in our campus church called The Revolution and this year, I've been working with campus life at one of the high schools in Muncie. Lutheran Hills is my favorite place in the world and has been since I was first a camper when I was 10. I feel so lucky to be part of the staff again this summer and to pass this incredible experience on to a new group of campers!

Claire Tangman- Hello all! I attend the University of Indianapolis. I am majoring in Biology/Pre-Optometry and will be returning as a sophomore in the fall. I'm on staff for the first time this summer as a counselor! :) I was a devoted camper at Lutheran Hills every year from 2nd grade until I graduated high school. I loved every second of my time there and always took so much away from my weeks at camp. Two important things about me: I love a good story and all things orange.

Leigh Anderson - I am attending Purdue University, and will be a Sophomore in the fall. My major is Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences with minors in Anthropology and Biology. I've been a camper at Lutherwald and Lutheran Hills nearly every year, and I am thrilled to finally be on staff this year!

Hello! My name is Joel Cox, I’m 22 years old hailing from the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. This is my second summer working for Lutheran Hills and I'm extremely excited about making a return! I’ve been taking time off of the University route to further my aspirations in Christian Ministries through programs such as YWAM (Youth With a Mission) in addition to leadership roles in churches and youth mentoring organizations here in Asheville. I love the atmosphere of Lutheran Hills while also being a part of their growth in the Christ that we are all learning more of each and every day. 2011 campers, get ready for one awesome summer!

Anna Van Westen - I am a senior at IPFW majoring in Business with a concentration in Accounting. I have worked on camp staff at Lake Luther for the last five summers as support staff, counselor and the kitchen supervisor. I will be the kitchen supervisor at LH this summer, and I am looking forward to spending more time at the southern camp.

Scott Van Westen - I am graduating as an informatics major from Trine University with a specialty in Database Management, and I am currently searching for a job. I have worked at Lake Luther for the last three summers as a counselor and volunteer. I will be the Waterfront director at LH this summer, and I am looking forward to playing with all of the campers!

WOW Work Weekend at Lutheran Hills

Many friends of LOM spent the weekend of March 25 at Lutheran Hills helping to prepare the construction site for a new Wiffle Ball stadium, Camp Store, & recreation area. These pictures show much of the clearing that had been done before our arrival.

Lutheran Outdoor Ministries - Focus Group Retreat

In January the Board, staff, and friends of LOM came together at a goal setting retreat in Noblesville, Indiana. This group, led by Don Currie of Mission Enablers, examined the strengths and brainstormed ideas for the future direction of our ministry. The Board and staff will use the information gathered that day as we plot our forward course.
